And this is tackled from both conceptual and treatment angles. As I mention in the episode, I don't encounter these types of problem behaviors that frequently these days, so it was a treat to update my knowledge in this area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Embed Player\" src=\"\/\/play.libsyn.com\/embed\/episode\/id\/22799072\/height\/192\/theme\/modern\/size\/large\/thumbnail\/yes\/custom-color\/233d61\/time-start\/00:00:00\/playlist-height\/200\/direction\/backward\" height=\"192\" width=\"100%\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\" oallowfullscreen=\"true\" msallowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border: none;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p>It's easy to think of automatic reinforcement as a monolith, but as it turns out, even dividing it up between positive and negative reinforcement may not be sufficient enough to render effective treatment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/ordering.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/Lite\/Subs.aspx?doi=10.1002\/(ISSN)1938-3703&amp;ref=1938-3703\">Click Here to Subscribe to JABA<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We spent probably the first 25-30 minutes discussing some of the known challenges associated with assessing and treating these repertoires, and then spend the remaining time discussing Javier and his colleagues' paper, which presented two very unique investigations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/behavioralobservations.com\/get-ceus\/\">Get 1.5 CEUs for Listening to this Inside JABA Episode<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you work with individuals with these profiles, you'll want to listen all the way through, and better still, check out the paper itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the studies we discussed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/jaba.900\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Functional analysis patterns of automatic reinforcement: A review and component analysis of treatment effects<\/a> (Virues-Ortega et al., 2022)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1901\/jaba.1995.28-269\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">An analysis of the reinforcing properties of handmouthing<\/a> (Goh et al., 1995)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26223959\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Delineating subtypes of Self Injurious Behavior maintained by automatic reinforcement<\/a> (Hagopian, Rooker, and Zarcone, 2015).<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/jaba.902?af=R\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A retrospective analysis of stereotypy: Applicability of the behavioral subtyping model<\/a> (Wunderlich, Hemstreet and Best, 2022; not discussed during this episode, but in the same issue of JABA, and on my list to read next).&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, I'd be remiss if I did not take a minute to thank Linda LeBlanc for reaching out to me to start the Inside JABA series. As I tell her every chance I get, I consider it an honor to be involved with the flagship journal in our field.
