Dr. Greg Hanley returns to the Behavioral Observations Podcast, and in this episode we talk about best practices for functional analyses and function-based treatment. He patiently coaches me on some of my attempts to conduct IISCA-type Functional Analyses and FCT interventions. Finally, we also get into some interesting discussions including how research influences practice (or vice-versa), as well as the proper role of descriptive assessments in our clinical work.
Greg has generously offered to return to the podcast to do some Q & A, so if you have questions about these topics, go to the contact page and let me know what's on your mind.
For additional resources on these topics, check out Greg's website, www.practicalfunctionalassessment.com. Greg also has an online CE training on these topics, and to learn more about this, check out this post at www.behavioralobservations.com.
Finally, this podcast is sponsored by bSci21.org, which is an ABA news site that connects our science to everyday applications. If you get a chance, go check out some of the thought provoking stories that are available over there.
It was hard for me to understand what Dr. Hanley was saying due to the quality of the audio.
The first session was great. Thank you!
Houria, thank you for writing in. May I ask how you were listening to the show? i.e., iPhone podcast player, stitcher radio, streaming from the website? I’ve had listeners say that some media have better audio than others. My goal is to have a great listener experience so I apologize for this. If there are specific sections of the audio that are worse than others, and you want more information about those sections, please write back. I’m also trying to get Greg back for a Q & A show, so please also write me with specific questions if you have them. Thank you again for bringing this issue to my attention!
Hi! Great podcast. I couldn’t catch the names of the authors of the study with 30 participants that Dr.Hanley mentioned. Would you be able to share that with me?
I think it was Joshua Jessel. I would check out http://www.practicalfunctionalassessment.com, where I believe they have additional information. Thank you for the kind feedback! I’m glad you’re enjoying the show!
Great podcast!!! So glad you asked the question about how things unfold logistically in a school setting!
Yup, Greg usually provides good advice that is actionable in everyday settings, and not just high level clinical settings. Looking forward to his Keynote address at the 3rd annual NH ABA conference. Glad you enjoyed the episode Karen!
I love these podcasts! I had difficulty hearing the author of an article Dr. Hanley referred to as support for using a mand not historically emitted in combination with problem behavior, thus supporting the use of an omnibus mand. I would love to read it, do you happen to know which article this is?
Hi Emily you may want to check out http://www.practicalfunctionalassessment.com; Greg lists all of his publications there and you may be able to find which one he was talking about.
Love the podcast! My question, are these the full “show notes” that I hear about on the podcast, or is there another spot I should be looking for notes. I am looking for, in particular, an article Dr. Hanley references with a more specific outline of each of the steps in the function-based treatment. I have checked his website as well, but I am not finding it.
Hi Danielle, I’m really glad you like the show! Yes, these are the shownotes. I do not recall the specific study Greg mentioned though. You may want to check out Google Scholar and search under his name (providing it’s one published by him).
I could not hear the speaker
I’m so sorry that you couldn’t hear the speaker. Can you let me know what application you used to listen to the episode, as well as what hardware you used? Feel free to email me so we can get to the bottom of this. It’s a great episode, so I want to make sure you are able to hear what Greg has to say. Best, Matt
