Evolution Science, ACT, and Behavior Analysis: A Conversation with Steve Hayes – Session 58

I had an amazing opportunity to chat with Dr. Steve Hayes, the Nevada Foundation Professor in the Behavior Analysis program at the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, as well as ACT and RFT pioneer.

He's also written more peer-reviewed articles than I've probably read in my lifetime. In this episode, Steve and I discuss his forthcoming book on Evolution and Contextual Science, ACT training for Behavior Analysis practitioners (including the upcoming Boot Camp that's taking place soon), and the preparation of today's BCBAs.

Steve mentioned several books and papers in our conversation, and I've tried to capture them all here:

I hope you enjoyed this conversation as much as I did. I'm sure this episode will generate a lot of feedback, and Steve is game for coming back for a Q & A episode. You can follow Steve on Twitter here.

Hi

I listened to the podcasts on the ACT therapy and I find it very interesting and in votive approach to the depression and anxiety. I am a BCBA . Is there ACT therapy certification I can do that can certify me to provide ACT therapy? I apologize if my question seems out of place.
Thank you

I do not know of one off the top of my head. My suggestion is that you join the Association for Contextual Behavior Science, where you will have access to a lot of reading and other training materials. I think you may be able to join some interest groups where a) you can ask this question there, and b) get way more help than I’m providing here. Best of luck! Matt

Hi,
I’m trying to find the articles by some of the authors who were mentioned in this episode in the discussion around TM. I don’t know if the spelling’s correct. Charlie Firster, Peme Kaman, Bob Waller? Could you please correct my spelling so I can look them up? Or even better suggest some readings that you were alluding to?

thanks!
Katrina

Hi Katrina, I don’t have these references handy right now, but I’ll forward this to Steve and see what input he has. Glad you’re interested in reading more about this stuff!

Wow!!! Steve is amazing!!! I love how he took us deep into the matrix we call Applied Behavior Analysis!!! I loved his advice at the end!!! I think it boils down to follow your dreams! I really needed that hope and encouragement 🙂

Hi Candice, this episode is, by far, the most commented on one I’ve done thus far. I’m so glad you enjoyed it, and you’re spot on in that his advice is killer! Best, Matt

Matt,
I LOVE the podcast! This episode is fascinating. I’m on my third play through, trying to glean as much as I can from Dr. Hayes. He referenced an article that he was working on with Jonathan Tarbox, do you know what the title is or when it will be published?

Great podcast! At times I found myself perplexed, that is one smart dude. One of the things that he intrigued me was when he said: do you even know your history (stated to a collective of BCBAs) ? Which brings up a question, if one wants to learn our history-what do they read, watch, or listen to?

Matt Cicoria

You might want to go back and listen to Session 7 (I think), where I interview Dr. Jim Johnston. We talk about the history of behavior analysis a lot in that one… not as in depth as Steve was alluding to, but it’s a good start.
